Grimdark Writing Workshop
Grimdark fiction is a storytelling mode built on moral complexity, bleak consequences, inverted growth arcs, harsh worlds, and endings that can satisfy readers without pretending everything is fine.
In this two-session workshop, Katherine D. Graham will guide you through the differences between dark fiction, grimdark, horror, cozy dark, and related storytelling styles. You’ll learn how to recognize when your story crosses into grimdark territory, how to elevate your themes, how POV changes the reader’s experience, and how to build characters whose arcs move through shadow instead of easy redemption.
You’ll also explore important considerations around sensitive content, reader expectations, YA grimdark, and marketing darker fiction in a world where readers may be seeking intensity, catharsis, and meaning.
What you'll gain:
2 x 90 minute interactive workshop sessions
Practical frameworks for identifying grimdark hallmarks, darkness levels, themes, tropes, and character arcs
Guided exercises to help you rate your story’s darkness and create an inverted growth arc for your main character
